Covert Hypnosis: Fact or Fiction

Copyright (c) 2010 Nick Clipton

Covert hypnosis is the method of communicating with another person's subconscious mind without their realizing it. This can happen in a seemingly innocent conversation, a method known as conversational hypnosis. The hypnotist will use words to lead the subconscious of the other to think on the lines that they are trying to influence them on.

The objective is always to manipulate the other to do their bidding. One use is to affect the way people feel about a product. With covert hypnosis, the listener can actually change their skepticism into a need and they will develop a psychological urge to use or purchase a certain product, even if they do not need to do so. The marketing strategy to increase sales is to develop text and messages that are subliminal in nature. This will increase the sales and profits of the company that sells the product, even if the product is not as it is portrayed.

With these claims, more and more people are beginning to realize that some of their actions are controlled by the advertisements and the shows that they see on television. Some even claim that they lost a lot of money because they were covertly hypnotized. Is there truth to these claims, or is this a fictional claim?

Truth of the matter is, the answer can be double-bladed. There are some people who are susceptible to suggestions, others are not. To be successfully hypnotized, one has to totally submit to the hypnotist and if the person is the type who is easily manipulated, then yes, this is reality for them. But for those who are analytical and skeptical in the first place, manipulating these personalities may be difficult to accomplish.

Psychologists talk about barriers and walls that may surround a person's personal space. Depending on the strength of character, these barriers and walls can be attacked and brought down, opening them to suggestions, or they could be attacked to no avail and cannot be manipulated.

For a marketing strategy, covert hypnotism is very successful and is employed by more and more advertising campaigns, even political campaigns. The careful choice of words that can illicit the most emotional responses will be employed by those who specialize in conversational hypnosis. They are very successful as one can see from the media alone. It is up to the individual to set aside these manipulative words and to think on their own two feet.
