How To Get Your Novel Published

Writing a novel is a monumental task. If you've finished one, or you are about to, then congratulations. Many people would like to write a novel, and quite a few get started, but not very many actually follow through and finish the process. The fact that you've done so speaks volumes to your level of commitment and motivation. Of course, now you've got another big project ahead of you. Many first time novelists are dismayed when they find out what a task it is to get published. Of course, the flip side of this is that today, there are plenty more ways to get published than most people realize. In this article, you'll learn the basics of getting published, so you can get that out of the way and get on with your second book.

The first thing you'll need to do is to find an agent. This can be a tough job in and of itself. You'll find that many agents want authors that have already been published, and already have a huge fan base. This can be disheartening for those who are just starting out. But keep at it. There are plenty of agents who are just starting out as well, and would love the chance to shop your book around to publishers.

First of all, you'll need a list of agents. There are plenty of websites that specialize in agent listings. What you'll need is a short introductory letter explaining who you are, what your book is about, and why you think it will sell. Most agents take queries by email these days, so you should send out between ten and twenty every day. Just keep at it until you get somebody that's interested.

If you've been searching for an agent for more than six months, it may be time to start thinking about self publishing. There are plenty of publishers that will publish your book, for a fee, so that it's listed on Amazon and available in many bookstores.

If you go the self publishing route, then you'll have to do a bit of marketing and sales on your own. This means doing whatever you can do to get people interested in your book. Start a blog, become active in writer communities, make up business card with your book information on them and pass them around to everybody that you meet. Many best selling authors today got their start self publishing their first book. When you get around to finishing your second book, getting agent and publisher will be much easier, as you'll already have gone through the process, and have a book available.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that you can never give up. Once you give up, it's all over. So keep writing, and keep sending queries to agents until you've got a book deal.
