Other times, however, people can experience negative effects caused by their vices. These people want to overcome their bad habits, but don't know how. Smoking is an example of a vice that can have detrimental effects. There are useful tools available that can help people overcome their smoking habits. People that want to stop smoking can do so with the help of electronic cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes are devices that mimic the look and feel of real cigarettes. They produce a vapor that is inhaled. This vapor can taste like regular cigarettes, but it doesn't contain nicotine. People who smoke often have oral fixations, and this tool can provide pleasant oral stimulation that is similar to that of real cigarettes. This therapy can be used alone or with other stop-smoking therapies, such as nicotine gum.

Another common habit that can get people into trouble is compulsive shopping. Some people buy more clothes, shoes, housewares or other items than they need, which can rack up large bills. These people get hooked on the fulfillment and stress relief that they experience when they treat themselves with new possessions. The first step for overcoming a drinking vice is to realize the negative effects that drinking too much alcohol can cause, thus ending denial over the situation. Another useful strategy is to keep all alcohol out of the house, so that the temptation to drink is lessened.

People pursue all of these vices for similar reasons: they are searching for relief from the stresses that their lives can cause. Modern life is heavy with cares and concerns that can pile up and become stressful and overwhelming.

Treatments for bad habits may work for a little while, but unless they are combined with stress-reduction and reframing programs, they will ultimately fail. Proper plans of attack for people's vices must include both targeted treatment options for the vices themselves, and programs that address the way that these people respond to stress. Meditation and mindfulness are two strategies that can reduce people's perceptions of stress. By using both these strategies, the burden of bad habits and the negative effects that they cause can be eliminated, so that people can live more enjoyable lives.
