5 Common Uses of Telepresence

Telepresence refers to the video and/or audio technologies that allow an individual or group to give the appearance of currently being in the room, despite not being physically located at another location. Usage of video conferencing technology has increased over the years, as live streaming has become economically feasible. This advancing technology is being used in more and more scenarios as the equipment and means of communication is becoming more developed. This also coincides with a fall in the cost to produce and therefore buy the equipment.

First, telepresence has been used widely in the business world as a means to hold meetings between individuals that may be in different states, or even different countries. By using this, the company saves money on many items, such as travel, food, fuel, and sleeping arrangements.

Another use is to aid the deaf, the hearing impaired, mute, and those who know sign language. The video relay allows at least two people to communicate through sign language in order to communicate. This enables greater access to the computer, and to find and give the support of others who may be in the same situation as they are.

Education has also recently been researching this area. Professors and students could quickly and easily relay a lecture, presentation, or perform a skit. This may enable universities around the world to reach remote areas where students may not be able to safely attend class, or the college is too far from the student.

U.S. military families have begun to meet deployed members over the software. The software allows a more in-depth connection between each person, and provides a means of sharing experiences with one another. These meetings most recently became common in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lastly, this program helps enable remote surgeries, in which the patient and doctor are in two different locations. Though it is still a beginning endeavor, remote-controlled robots are combined with live video to allow doctors to perform basic surgeries, such as gall bladder surgery and cholecystectomy.

By allowing a more natural presence, telepresence provides users the means to communicate naturally with each other. Even if the distance is of great length, using this revolutionary product will enable better relationships, will help reduce traffic on the roads, will reduce air traffic and therefore CO2 emissions with all of this having very positive effects on the environment. It will not be long before telepresence to be used in many industries and sectors of business within the near future.
