Common Orchid Types and Who They Are Best Suited For

There are many orchid types that can be found throughout the world, and each of them is unique and beautiful in their own way. Many orchids are located in tropical areas of the world, and among them is the moth orchid, perhaps the most common kind. It is also referred to as the Phalaenopsis orchid and you are able to buy it from your local nursery or grocery store.

There are multiple types of this one kind of orchid, including the pink and purple flower which is found mostly in Asia. In the fashion industry, this particular flower has inspired the color "orchid", especially confusing for those who actually grow orchids, because they come in a wide variety of shades and colors.

The Phalaenopsis orchid grows on certain trees and rocks in mostly moist environments. They are considered by many to be one of the most beautiful, graceful looking flowers in existence because of their long colorful spikes which protrude outward after blooming. Their blooming period is around two to three months, and they are commonly used in weddings and other special events/occasions where stylish decorations are a must.

Another type of orchid is the Dendrobium, and they are commonly seen in many Thai restaurants as a form of decoration. These too come in a variety of colors, including green, purple, pink, yellow, white, and many more. This particular type of orchid often loses itself leaves in the winter when the temperature drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. This type of orchid is considered to be a hybrid creation and is part of the Dendrobium genus with many other beautiful flowers.

There is also what is called Slipper orchids, and they are named after their odd appearance which differs greatly in some ways from that of more traditional orchids. These orchids are for the most part terrestrial; however they are certainly not for someone who has just started planting. If you have a truly green thumb however, then you may want to consider taking these on in your garden. They can be tricky for someone who does not have a lot of experience in growing them, simply because of their unique growing requirements.

Another type of orchid is the Paphiopedilum Kobold's Doll, another strange name for a unique orchid. Although you won't be able to find this specific flower just anywhere, you might be able to pick some up at a more up-scale flower shop or nursery. These flowers are colored with yellow and pink, making them a very popular choice for women who are trying to coordinate certain events with beautiful decorations, often times including these orchids.

They are very popular in the U.S but tend to be very costly. Although they are good for short events which do not require a long growing period, they do tend to dry out rather quickly and require special care with plenty of sunlight. They are considered to be one of the more elusive types of orchids, yet still very nice to look at.
