How Acupuncture Works As Headache Treatment

To find effective tension headache relief you do not need to take pain killers. A natural and effortless method is using an acupressure mat. That way you do not risk any side effects at all.

Having headache (including migraine) often leads to taking days off sick and generally having a lower quality of life, more visits to a doctor and taking medication more often.

Several studies have shown that acupuncture helps to lessen the severity and fequency of headaches. It is even more telling that the effects can be measured up to a year since a course of treatment was finished by an acupuncture therapist.

In other words, the results are long lasting!

It is accepted that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment and often an alternative to drugs (aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen.), which often can have side effects that can be very serious.

The side effects include lethargy, stomach ulcers, constipation, nausea, and shallow breathing. None of these unwanted effects happen when you have acupuncture, it is much safer.

So how does acupuncture work?

In traditional oriental medicine the needles are placed in spots on the body that either stimulate or inhibit the flow of energy - "Qi" - that flows through our bodies.

According to the ancient theories illness results when the energy flow is disrupted for some reason. Even though modern medicine does not understand it's way of working, it is gaining in popularity.

A more "user friendly" concept than conventional acupuncture has recently been developed, mainly in Sweden, based on research in the US and in Russia.

This is the "acupressure mat", also known as the "Hedgehog Mat". This modern version of the age old Indian mat has 6400 small pressure points.

The idea is that when you lie down on it there are so many points that some will inevitably hit the right acupuncture spot and trigger your immune system into action, thus relieving headaches and migraines.

It will also increase blood flow and make your muscles relax. Since it requires no physical effort and no training, it is extremely easy to use and can be used everywhere and at any time, by anyone.

It is being used for not only headache, but also insomnia and muscle pain, amongst other problems.
