There are lots of situations where the line is blurred between what we want and what we need. The dictionary defines a want as "to desire greatly; wish for" or "to be in need of; require" and a need as "a condition or situation in which something is required or wanted" or "necessity, obligation." Hmm. So, a need can also be a want and a want can also be a need. No wonder there is so much confusion about these two words!
It is also easy to confuse want and need in your business. You may want a downline of 10,000, but maybe you aren't ready for that yet. If you are new to the business and you suddenly find yourself with a downline of 10,000, you may actually be in trouble.
You may not have had the training you need to successfully train and maintain a group of that size. Getting too far ahead of yourself with wants can actually slow you down or even damage the future of the business and destroy your changes to get what you want.
You may want a separate room for your office with a nice computer set up and all kind of business materials. You may only need a space on the dining room table for your laptop—at least in the beginning.
You may want business cards, samples, and brochures before you try to talk to someone about your business. What you need is a good understanding of the business and the ability to explain it in a comprehensible form.
Set your immediate goals to match what you need. If your goal is to make an extra $300 a month, then set the goal for your downline size to match that goal. Your long range goals can certainly include everything you ultimately want, just don't forget the steps between.
You get into a business and you are really excited! You want to get out there right away. If you've never been in a business like this before, you might need to slow down just a little and make sure you understand enough about the business. You certainly don't have to know everything, but you don't want to misrepresent yourself or your company.
As the song goes: "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need."(Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones). But you might also might find that getting what you need will ultimately get you what you want!
