We've all had them. Those days that never seem to end. There is, of course, always work to do, but nothing we want to do.
No one interesting calls. It seems like business is at a standstill and you are just watching the clock. You feel like you should accomplish something, but what? This may be a good time to make that list. What list? The list of things you need to do when you have some time.
What kinds of things can be on that list? Almost anything, but there are a few things related to your business that can help keep on you track.
1. When was the last time you looked at your goals? If you have been putting that off, this is a good time to update.
2. How is your recordkeeping? Now is a good time to update any financial records that need to be updated, sort your receipts, and get things in order.
3. Are there people that you should be calling just to check up and see how things are going? This is a good time.
4. How are your personal records? This may be a good time to check on your insurance and make sure your coverage is up to date. This is particularly true for life and homeowners policies.
5. Have you kept up on your business reading? Now is a good time to read a book you haven't been able to get to. Don't forget to write down the important things you learned from the book.
6. Updating contacts. How many people on your list do you still keep in contact with? Can you even remember why they are on your list?
7. Clean up your emails. That joke from three years ago can probably go to the trash since you probably don't remember you even had it.
8. Get ahead on your writing. Is there an article or blog you can write that you can use during one of those crazy weeks when you won't be able to get anything done?
9. Do some internet research. You can look up similar companies and see if there is anything new going on. Research some new business practice you wanted to try. Make a list of the things you want to research.
10. Straighten out your workspace. It may seem like a waste of time, but you might be surprised what useful things you will find that were buried long ago and that you probably forgot about.
There is always something to do in a business. Not all of it is exciting and fun, but it is all part of your business. When you have downtime, put it to use doing some of the more routine things so you can be more productive when thing are really buzzing.
