"Bath tub" cannot be found in the English dictionary, and the word "bathtub" is apparently an Americanism, that is, a word that had its first use in the United States and is used primarily in North America. But however spelled, the term is commonly understood to refer to a vessel used for bathing. And while today's bath tubs certainly perform this function, they now offer much more in therapeutic value and enjoyment than their ancestors.
The simple bath tub has a noble history. As early as 500 BC the Romans built shallow swimming pools out of marble for the purpose of bathing. Documented early plumbing systems for bathing go back as far as around 3300 BC with the discovery of copper water pipes beneath a palace in ancient India. In 1752 Benjamin Franklin is purported to be the first American to import a bath tub, and he is credited with creating a new tub that was more comfortable. Even with hundreds of years of improvements in the bath tub, today's tub would be virtually unrecognizable to earlier cultures.
Acrylic Tubs
- Acrylic tub shells are thermoformed in Lucite cast acrylic, which is extremely scratch and stain-resistant. - The color of this material is consistent throughout its thickness, making its finish renewal for long-term durability and beauty. - This non-porous surface also makes cleaning and sanitizing quicker and more effective. - The acrylic shell is then reinforced with a thick layer of fiberglass/resin/titanium backing for structural integrity. - Rectangular and corner tubs even receive metal reinforcement around the perimeter.
Engineered Solid-Surface Tubs
- Solid-surface tubs are constructed using specialist "ESS" material, which is a mixture of ground natural minerals and binding agents that are liquefied, poured and then hardened. - Approximately 60% of the materials used are organic, including minerals mined from the earth and dirt. - The result is molded stone, solid through-and-through, with no layers, hollow or void areas. - This material is non-porous, stain, mold-and-mildew-resistant, making cleaning and maintenance easy.
