Getting a good night's sleep is a skill that can come easily to a lot of us but for some insomnia sufferers it is a skill that eludes them. The quest for that elusive rest becomes desperate!
Well meaning friends describe how they fall asleep. The words "I'm always fast asleep before my head hits the pillow," make you want to scream and shout! You feel you're the only one in the world who has forgotten how to go to sleep. You used to be able to sleep but now you seem to have completely lost the ability. How can this be?
Sometimes insomnia is caused by a medical condition, in which case you will need to seek the help of your doctor. However, if yours isn't due to a medical condition, you may simply have developed some bad habits without even realizing it. You may like to try some of the tactics that the "sleep experts" use. Try doing the following:
- Watch How Much You Eat! While it's not good to over-eat at any time it's partic! ularly bad near bedtime. No matter how tempted you are - Don't Go Back For That Second Helping! Shuffling off to bed on an uncomfortably over-full stomach is going to make you restless and you'll be up again in an hour or so reaching for the indigestion remedy. It also pays to keep away from high energy or spicy food - keep them to earlier in the day.
- Avoid Taking Naps! Whilst it is very tempting to take a nap during the day when you've had a really bad night's sleep the night before it can contribute to the problem and do more harm than good. You know that eating between meals ruins your appetite so sleeping during the day can ruin your sleep appetite. Save your sleeping for nighttime when it will do you the most good.
